This plugin uses terser to minify your JavaScript.
This module requires a minimum of Node v6.9.0 and Webpack v3.0.0.
Webpack v4 users should use the non-legacy terser-webpack-plugin
.
To begin, you'll need to install terser-webpack-plugin-legacy
:
1$ npm install terser-webpack-plugin-legacy --save-dev
Then add the plugin to your webpack
config. For example:
webpack.config.js
1const TerserPlugin = require('terser-webpack-plugin-legacy'); 2 3module.exports = { 4 optimization: { 5 minimizer: [new TerserPlugin()], 6 }, 7};
And run webpack
via your preferred method.
test
Type: String|RegExp|Array<String|RegExp>
Default: /\.m?js(\?.*)?$/i
Test to match files against.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 test: /\.js(\?.*)?$/i, 6 }), 7 ], 8 }, 9};
include
Type: String|RegExp|Array<String|RegExp>
Default: undefined
Files to include.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 include: /\/includes/, 6 }), 7 ], 8 }, 9};
exclude
Type: String|RegExp|Array<String|RegExp>
Default: undefined
Files to exclude.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 exclude: /\/excludes/, 6 }), 7 ], 8 }, 9};
chunkFilter
Type: Function<(chunk) -> boolean>
Default: () => true
Allowing to filter which chunks should be uglified (by default all chunks are uglified).
Return true
to uglify the chunk, false
otherwise.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 chunkFilter: (chunk) => { 6 // Exclude uglification for the `vendor` chunk 7 if (chunk.name === 'vendor') { 8 return false; 9 } 10 11 return true; 12 }, 13 }), 14 ], 15 }, 16};
cache
Type: Boolean|String
Default: false
Enable file caching.
Default path to cache directory: node_modules/.cache/terser-webpack-plugin
.
ℹ️ If you use your own
minify
function please read theminify
section for cache invalidation correctly.
Boolean
Enable/disable file caching.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 cache: true, 6 }), 7 ], 8 }, 9};
String
Enable file caching and set path to cache directory.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 cache: 'path/to/cache', 6 }), 7 ], 8 }, 9};
cacheKeys
Type: Function<(defaultCacheKeys, file) -> Object>
Default: defaultCacheKeys => defaultCacheKeys
Allows you to override default cache keys.
Default cache keys:
1({ 2 terser: require('terser/package.json').version, // terser version 3 'terser-webpack-plugin': require('../package.json').version, // plugin version 4 'terser-webpack-plugin-options': this.options, // plugin options 5 path: compiler.outputPath ? `${compiler.outputPath}/${file}` : file, // asset path 6 hash: crypto 7 .createHash('md4') 8 .update(input) 9 .digest('hex'), // source file hash 10});
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 cache: true, 6 cacheKeys: (defaultCacheKeys, file) => { 7 defaultCacheKeys.myCacheKey = 'myCacheKeyValue'; 8 9 return defaultCacheKeys; 10 }, 11 }), 12 ], 13 }, 14};
parallel
Type: Boolean|Number
Default: false
Use multi-process parallel running to improve the build speed.
Default number of concurrent runs: os.cpus().length - 1
.
ℹ️ Parallelization can speedup your build significantly and is therefore highly recommended.
Boolean
Enable/disable multi-process parallel running.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 parallel: true, 6 }), 7 ], 8 }, 9};

Enable multi-process parallel running and set number of concurrent runs.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 parallel: 4, 6 }), 7 ], 8 }, 9};
sourceMap
Type: Boolean
Default: false
Use source maps to map error message locations to modules (this slows down the compilation).
If you use your own minify
function please read the minify
section for handling source maps correctly.
⚠️
cheap-source-map
options don't work with this plugin.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 sourceMap: true, 6 }), 7 ], 8 }, 9};
minify
Type: Function
Default: undefined
Allows you to override default minify function. By default plugin uses terser package. Useful for using and testing unpublished versions or forks.
⚠️ Always use
require
insideminify
function whenparallel
option enabled.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 minify: (file, sourceMap) => { 6 const extractedComments = []; 7 8 // Custom logic for extract comments 9 10 const { error, map, code, warnings } = require('uglify-module') // Or require('./path/to/uglify-module') 11 .minify(file, { 12 /* Your options for minification */ 13 }); 14 15 return { error, map, code, warnings, extractedComments }; 16 }, 17 }), 18 ], 19 }, 20};

regexp condition and remove remaining comments.
If the original file is named foo.js
, then the comments will be stored to foo.js.LICENSE
.
The terserOptions.output.comments
option specifies whether the comment will be preserved, i.e. it is possible to preserve some comments (e.g. annotations) while extracting others or even preserving comments that have been extracted.

If you avoid building with comments, set terserOptions.output.comments to false as in this config:
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 terserOptions: { 6 output: { 7 comments: false, 8 }, 9 }, 10 }), 11 ], 12 }, 13};
Override default minify function - use uglify-js
for minification.
webpack.config.js
1module.exports = { 2 optimization: { 3 minimizer: [ 4 new TerserPlugin({ 5 // Uncomment lines below for cache invalidation correctly 6 // cache: true, 7 // cacheKeys: (defaultCacheKeys) => { 8 // delete defaultCacheKeys.terser; 9 // 10 // return Object.assign( 11 // {}, 12 // defaultCacheKeys, 13 // { 'uglify-js': require('uglify-js/package.json').version }, 14 // ); 15 // }, 16 minify: (file, sourceMap) => { 17 // https://github.com/mishoo/UglifyJS2#minify-options 18 const uglifyJsOptions = { 19 /* your `uglify-js` package options */ 20 }; 21 22 if (sourceMap) { 23 uglifyJsOptions.sourceMap = { 24 content: sourceMap, 25 }; 26 } 27 28 return require('uglify-js').minify(file, uglifyJsOptions); 29 }, 30 }), 31 ], 32 }, 33};
